From February’s Writing Prompts, February 11, 2016
I’m going to deviate from the topic just a little, by getting rid of that hyphen. Who wants to hear about a six-pack of beer, or those six-pack abs? Not me, and I don’t think I could make that sound good in writing.
Let’s talk about Joe Sixpack. You know, the “Average Joe”. I’m not really sure why the term “six pack” got pinned to the description of the average person. I guess the common and ordinary Americans were seen as the cheap beer-drinking type? Sounds like an outdated representation of a below-average person, unless you’re talking about the craft-beer drinking type you would see nowadays. Either way, why would “beer” be associated with “average”?
I guess it’s ok to be considered average, but why would you want to be? Go make a name for yourself, other than Joe! (Sorry to those already named Joe, this is not a pun directed at you!) Be exceptional and extraordinary! It’s so much more interesting.
